Upholding Human Dignity Must Be a Priority for Everyone of Us

Once again, the federal government is proposing harmful action targeting the human dignity of our most vulnerable communities. On Wednesday, Nov. 19, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) proposed a rule to roll back the current Public Charge definition that allows lawfully present immigrants to have health and social service assistance taken away from them. Currently, DHS considers whether green card applicants—lawfully present immigrants—have used cash assistance or received nursing home care through Medicaid when determining eligibility for permanent residency.

Under the proposed rule DHS could make Public Charge determinations based on an applicant’s use of any health or social services program. The specific programs have not yet been identified and, according to DHS, would be determined later in the process.

Let’s be clear: this proposed policy is strategically and intentionally designed to not only instill fear in our local communities, but to magnify chaos and discourage residents from accessing the services they rightfully deserve. The stakes are high, but we have the power to push back against this injustice, standing in solidarity alongside our communities and through collective action.

The current administration thrives on fear. On uncertainty. We can fight back and ensure all our voices are heard. Protecting Immigrant Families (PIF) has compiled vital resources to share with your organization, communities and those who are directly affected by the potential rollback of public charge. Their Public Charge Regulation Toolkit includes resources such as talking points for the press/community audiences, policy fact sheets, and coordination actions to stem the tides of fear and help us all spread the word on this horrific change. We ask that you consider public commentin opposition to the public charge notice of proposed rulemaking. PIF has also compiled this useful template to help you draft a comment on behalf of your organization, tailoring it to your experience/expertise working with communities who are directly impacted by this harmful proposed rule. Your comment is vital, especially since any documented opposition to rolling back the existing public charge rule could be used in future litigation.

I remain steadfast in my belief in the unwavering power, strength, and resilience of our community. While this proposal threatens to deepen fear, The Health Trust is committed to standing with our partners, communities, and residents they serve by listening, supporting, and advocating every step of the way. A civilized and thriving society creates institutions and policies that protect and uplift human dignity. This moment reminds us of the importance of working together and meeting challenges with compassion, unity, and resolve.
