Maria has a strong passion for supporting local communities, with a specific focus on vulnerable populations. As a Program Officer at The Health Trust she manages the agency’s Grantmaking department. In this role, Maria is responsible for communicating the agency’s grant priorities to the community and prospective grant applicants. She is committed to supporting grantees in meeting their grant objectives and connects grantees with other resources to advance their project goals.

Maria is a life-long resident of San Jose; she entered the nonprofit sector during her sophomore year in high school and has stayed in the sector since. Her experience includes managing direct services, board relations, community engagement, fundraising, and philanthropy.

As part of her commitment to civic engagement, she serves as Chair of the Hispanic Foundation’s La Familia Selection Committee and has served as Commissioner for the Santa Clara County Commission on the Status of Women, serving as Chair of the Crime and Violence Committee, overseeing the Commission’s Jail Monitoring work. Maria has also served as a National and State Delegate for her respective assembly and congressional districts, and is a graduate of the Latino Leadership Alliance Academy.

Maria holds a B.A. in Communication from Santa Clara University and M.A. from San Jose State University in Speech Communication.

Maria looks forward to helping strengthen and support her community through the knowledge that will be gained from the Leadership San Jose program.
